PSYCHOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK

Our psychological framework is our collection of thoughts, assumptions, mental images, ideas, perceptions, and beliefs, both conscious and implicit. It is a subjective rendering of the events and experiences of our lives, dictating what they mean to us. Your psychological framework is how you understand yourself, your life, and the world around you, including your golf game. While many components make up our psychological framework, chief among them is our beliefs.

Beliefs are a person’s most central ideas. More specifically, our beliefs are our most central ideas about the events and experiences of our lives. Along with our direct experiences, our beliefs are perhaps the strongest force behind why and how we do what we do because they determine what events and experiences mean to us. Beliefs act as a lens through which we interpret the world around us: they strongly influence our priorities and values; direct our focus; and generate our inner dialogue, all of which ultimately guide our behaviors. Some beliefs empower us and promote things like stable confidence and resilience. However, we can also develop beliefs that create self-imposed limitations, like fear of failure and entitlement.

On a basic level, the purpose of a belief is to produce and reinforce behaviors, both mental and physical. Therefore, different beliefs produce and reinforce different behaviors. Differing beliefs is why people can interpret and respond to the same event with a variety of different reactions. For example, people will have different responses to a breakup with a romantic partner or to the results of an election, just as they may have differing responses to things like a missed putt or teeing off in front of a crowd.

For any situation or event, our beliefs help us make sense of the world by answering two questions: What does this mean, and, more specifically, what does this mean about me? That meaning heavily impacts how stable our confidence will be and how we will act in situations where stable confidence is required. Thus, our beliefs are one of the primary sources of our actions, thoughts, and feelings—including confidence.
